Union Claim First Victory in Joliet

Joliet, IL - In a match that left what little drama it produced until late on, Union Dubuque held on to a first half lead to beat Joliet United SC 2-1 on the road for the club's first-ever win.

The starting lineup for Dubuque featured two trialists (Chris Rigby of the University of Dubuque and Antonio Sanchez of Drake University) and a core of Union mainstays.

The scoring opened early, as a Union attacker was brought down inside the Joliet penalty area in just the 3rd minute. Alex Herrera stepped up to the spot and put Dubuque ahead as the Joliet goalkeeper dove the other way. The first half showed Union's continued dominance as the Dubuque eleven created several good chances.

On 40 minutes, Logan Rinderknecht was in the right place at the right time to connect with a deflected cross from Kody Rife and slot home to double the Union lead just before halftime.

The second half brought far less drama as Dubuque controlled the ball and limited Joliet's chances to go forward. With just four minutes to play, Joliet was awarded a penalty kick, which was converted to halve the visitors' lead. However, the Dubuque team was able to withstand the increased pressure from the home team to see out the 2-1 victory.

The win takes Union into 5th place in the UPSL Midwest-Central Division table. Next up is a home match against 4th-placed DeKalb County United for a chance to continue climbing the table. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.uniondfc.com/tickets/dkcunited
